Animal Testing Must Be Eliminated
Testing on animals should be eliminated for various reasons. The first and main reason is that animal testing is cruel. The second reason is that there is no real advantage to animal testing because they are not homologous to humans. The third and last reason is that there are other methods widely available that do not involve cruel treatment to animals.
Animal testing is cruel and causes stress to the animals. They are put in cages and poked and prodded throughout the day. While animals are not by any means as intelligent as the human race, they are proven to have intelligence. Many animals can be trained and exhibit behavior that shows they feel emotion, pain, loneliness, fear, and stress. It should be obvious that keeping animals in lonely cages all day and forcing them to undergo painful testing would cause them stress. Animals should be allowed to run free and experience the normal animal activity that they were born to experience. They may not be able to speak and express themselves in words, but they do have intelligence and thus their rights must be protected by eliminating unnecessary animal testing.
Aside from the cruelty of animal testing, there is no real advantage to test on animals rather than alternative methods. Animal anatomy is similar but not homologous to human anatomy. Therefore, testing on animals provides no real results for human study. The human body is much more complex than that of a mouse or any other animal. As mammals, humans share the same body systems with other mammalian animals; however, this does not equate to sharing similar reactions or effects of medical testing. It could even be dangerous to assume that a human would exhibit the same reaction as another animal.
Lastly, there are other methods available to research scientists that do not involve animals. More research should be done in this area in order to eliminate animal testing completely. Other methods include in-vitro testing and testing on human volunteers. Humans can express their rights and willingly submit to testing while animals cannot. With these alternative methods, the results are 100% more conclusive and applicable than animal testing. Testing on human cells ensures the reliability of their conclusions.
In conclusion, animal testing is cruel to animals because it causes them stress, fear, and pain and is forced upon them without their consent. It is largely inconclusive because animal anatomy is different from human anatomy; results of testing cannot be said to mimic the results in humans. Finally, other methods are available that provide much more accurate and reliable results. Based on these reasons, animal testing should be eliminated altogether as inhumane and ineffective.
Animal testing is the use of animals in biological, medical, and psychological studies. Human beings and many animals have similar organ systems and body processes. Experiments on animals help scientists increase knowledge about the way the human body works. In the United States, scientists perform experiments on more than twenty million animals each year. That is way too many. Medical researchers study animals to get a better understanding of body processes in humans and animals. They use many animals to study the causes and effects of illnesses, such as cancer and heart disease. Vivisection is the most controversial issue of animal rights. Vivisection actually means “cutting a living thing”. Some popular companies that still test on animals are Band-Aid, Clorox, Febreze, Maybelline, and many more.
Right now, millions of mice, rats, rabbits, cats, dogs, and other animals are locked inside cold cages in labs across the country. They suffer in pain, ache with loneliness and long to be free. All they can do is sit in their cages and wait, in fear, for the next experiment to begin. The stress actually causes the animals to begin strange behavior like pulling out their hair and biting at their own skin. They jump in fear whenever someone walks past, scared that they will be chosen. After going through this terrible life, almost all of these animals are killed.
I feel animals are tested for meaningless numbers on a chart and then killed. There are many cheap, faster, and non-animal tests that can replace the ones that are out there now. The first realistic software models of human and animal organs are starting to emerge — potentially replacing some of the fifty to one hundred million animals used each year for scientific research. Human skin model tests are now being used, including the EpiDerm test, which has been accepted as a total replacement for skin corrosion studies in rabbits. Products could also be tested on cultured human cells grown in laboratories. This would be more reliable because they are actual human cells.
There are so many reasons to stop animal testing. All of these things are done to animals in laboratories but if they were done outside of these places, they would be considered crimes. The animals suffer everyday with no protection from cruelty. For one thing, it's wasteful because so many scientists have come up with humane and modern technology that is faster and cheaper than testing animals. Animal testing needs to be stopped immediately.
