Writing a cover letter gives you the opportunity to convince a hiring manager that you are the best candidate for a job opening. Ultimately, your letter should persuade the manager to invite you to an interview. When writing a cover letter as part of an application for a job in phlebotomy, focus on your practical experience and address any specific criteria outlined in the job advertisement.
Review the Ad
The advertisement for a job opening typically includes the minimum qualifications required for the job. Some recruiters also ask for specific information, such as your desired salary or information about your professional certifications. Before writing your cover letter, review the job advertisement and look for this information. For a phlebotomy opening, the advertisement will typically include the minimum amount of work experience required, the type of training expected and required professional certifications. The advertisement may also specify that you should have experience performing a specific number of blood draws and capillary sticks. Address each of these points as you draft your letter.
Open your letter with a professional greeting addressed to the recruiter or hiring manager. If the job advertisement does not contain that person's name, call the company and ask for the information. If you absolutely cannot get the person's name, use "Dear Hiring Manager" or a similar professional phrase in the greeting. Kathryn Kalanick, author of "Phlebotomy Technician Specialist," advises against using the phrase "To Whom it May Concern." This part of the cover letter should convince the recruiter or hiring manager that you are a well-rounded candidate with the experience and training needed to succeed in the posted position.
In the last paragraph of the letter, reaffirm your interest in the position and ask the reader to contact you to set up an interview. Include your telephone number and the best times to reach you. End the letter with "Sincerely yours" or a similar professional closing.
Editing and Formatting Tips
Before sending your cover letter, review it to ensure that you did not make any typographical errors. Check to make sure you have correctly spelled the name of the recruiter and the name of the organization. Review the job advertisement a second time to make sure you did not leave out any required information. If possible, have a friend read the letter to look for any mistakes you may have overlooked. Format the letter with a professional font, such as Arial or Times New Roman. Avoid using script fonts, as they may be difficult to read.
